Clean Living // Organic Sugar Scrub

This year I've really wanted to branch out into the world of clean eating and living. I've always wanted to indulge in this type of lifestyle, but honestly, I didn't think it was very practical or doable for our lives. I've since been doing a lot of research.  I'm learning that it really is possible to live a healthy, organic lifestyle on a budget. I'm looking forward to sharing what I've learned along the way, and I would love your thoughts, tips, and advice as well! For us, this isn't going to be an overnight process but something we plan to do one product at a time.

My first project is an organic sugar scrub. I was a little skeptical at first, but I've since used it twice, and I am in love. I keep telling Josh, "Feel how soft my arm is!" ha. He pretends to be interested. It's cute.

photo CLEANLIVINGorganichomemadesugarscrubdiy_zpse673a5f4.jpg Make sure you're purchasing all organic ingredients. I purchased mine at a local health food store, but you can probably find organic products of most of the ingredients at any major grocery store since they are basics.

3/4 cup coconut oil
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp of vanilla extract
Optional - 1tsp essential oil

Begin by mixing the coconut oil and 1/2 cup of brown sugar in a blender.
Once there are no more chunks of coconut oil, with a wooden spoon, mix together the remaining ingredients.
For the essential oil, I chose a citrus oil. Other scents that I think may
have worked well are rose, lavender, cinnamon, and sandalwood.

Thanks for letting me share my first organic product experiment with you!

  1. I've been using brown sugar scrub since last summer! It's amazing and my favorite.. so good for your skin! I just make mine with organic coconut oil and brown sugar.. so a little simpler version but works the same :) Good luck with becoming more healthy! little by little is the best way; I'm doing the same :) xoxo

  2. Your blog just got much better! :)
I love seeing what you come up with, but this post really resonates with my lifestyle.

    Thanks Kinsey!

  3. I've been interested in eating and living clean as well, I want to cut down on the processed junk! And this tutorial looks super easy, I might have to give it a try :)

  4. This is so perfect! I was looking for something like this to prepare for summer since its beyond cold & my poor skin has not seen daylight in months! I will definitely be trying this soon. Thanks for sharing. :)

  5. Looks really wonderful! Thank you. I will definitely try this.

  6. Coconut oil has so many uses. I use it mixed with lemon juice and sugar as for "shaving cream"/post-shaving awesomeness, mixed with baking soda for face scrub, and I put it on my ends about 30 minutes before I shower or on my split-ends post shower. It can also be used as a base for deodorant. I could go on and on.

  7. totally going to do this when I get the chance! :)

  8. Coconut oil is such a great moisturizer, and the brown sugar is a great exfoliant. I used to make a brown sugar and face exfoliant and it worked really well. I need to try out this body scrub! My skin gets so dry in the wintertime.

  9. I want to try this!

  10. How awesome is that?! Pretty awesome, I think.
I have got to try that recipe soon -- it looks so easy to make!

  11. What a great idea! You said blend the first half and once the chunks are gone, mix the rest.. Did u mean blend the rest or does mixing the remainder leave it more scrub like? I'm going to try this so just want to clarify! As for healthy living, not sure if youre interested in food ideas, but I am really loving my new 80/10/10 frutarian diet. I'm not 100% but working towards that, but recommend trying a fruit meal if you have any interest. Thought I would share since before hearing about it, I had never thought to throw 5-10 bananas in a blender for a meal, or sit down to eat 4-5 mangoes at a time. It's quite satisfying and energizing!

    1. Hi Krystle,

Mix the remaining ingredients in a bowl with a wooden spoon.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I'll change the wording in the post so it makes more sense. :)

  12. I've wanted to try a sugar scrub, maybe this is just the amount of inspiration I needed.

  13. I bet is smells and feels so good. You make it sound so easy, I may just have to try it! -Heidi

  14. oh yum! i need to try this!

  15. I make a homemade scrub as well ( but not nearly as pretty as yours : ) have you tried adding lemon? It's amazing!

  16. I mix brown sugar with a little bit of conditioner to exfoliate my scalp every now and again. Quinoa with conditioner works too. :o)

  17. This must smell divine! I may have to try it!

  18. I also did a similar thing with sea salt and olive oil and it is fantastic! I have to try this, too!

  19. I love the idea of organic/natural/clean living but thought the same thing as you - it just wasn't very practical for my life. I've been thinking about it more and more lately though and so might have to just bite the bullet and give it ago - and good idea - gradually! This scrub looks gorgeous!

  20. I am totally going to make this! Thanks for the post :)

  21. I've been trying to convert over to a more natural lifestyle myself, and so far so good! It really isn't as hard as you would expect... I'll definitely be making this. I love that there's coconut oil in this! It smells good, and it's pretty much a magic/good for EVERYTHING oil!
    Thanks for sharing, pretty lady!

  22. Sounds good enough to eat :) I love the new blog design, by the way!

  23. How much essential oil do you add?

  24. This is so awesome!!! I hope you share lots more... lots lots more!!! My only advice, since I am still learning as well, is buy in bulk. We have a store called WinCo that has big barrels of peanuts, almonds, dried fruits, etc... I can load up a bag each, than use the fruits as a snack, a baking ingredient, in my yogurt, etc.

  25. Love that you're getting into natural beauty...homemade products are my favorite ever :)

  26. Excited about following you on this new journey of yours. Just as Bohemian Kate posted homemade products are awesome & so rewarding too!!! And don't worry about being on a budget - I think a little frugality is needed to drive the desire to be more sustainable. Enjoy your journey!!!

  27. I've never made my own, but I absolutely love sugar scrubs. They leave your skin feeling incredibly soft, and even better, smelling like caramel!
