DIY Inspiration Challenge // Blanket Top Round One

One of my favorite ways to add handmade to my lifestyle is taking the old and mundane and turning it into something completely new.  For this project, I created a top out of a blanket I thrifted last week. This project took but ten minutes to make, and I was quite pleased with the outcome.

To create this top, simply take a large blanket or other piece of non-fray fabric, and cut it into a 3x5 ft. rectangle. Fold it in half, and cut a slit down the middle of the front flap all the way to the top of the fold. Cut another slit horizontally on the middle of the fold about six inches wide, creating the neck hole. Lastly, stitch the sides together, leaving large arm holes to create a loose fit.

When you go to make your next DIY project, try and think outside the box! For supplies, skip the craft store, and search a local thrift store or even your own closet. Think of household items that you could recycle and turn into something brand new. This can definitely be challenging, but I believe it can make you view your love for crafting in a whole new way. This week, challenge yourself to take something old, something you might be planning to throw out, and turn it into something beautiful. I'll show you the second top I've made with the rest of the blanket for Round Two next week!

  1. I've always been intrigued by the reusability and multiple functions of a single item. Which is why I enjoy following your blog. I will be going to the thrift store very soon, and will keep an eye open for interesting looking blankets. Thank you.

  12. this is WAY too cute, kinsey. and such a good way to think about doing diys -- sourcing from what you have, what your friends have, what you can thrift…instead of starting from scratch at the craft shop. love!
