Last night we slept on the roof again in honor of our dear pal's birthday. It was splendid weather with a slight breeze and clear skies. When we awoke, it was no longer clear, but an overcast of nothing but bright, pale grey. We didn't give it much thought and spent the rest of the morning reading, when all of a sudden a huge wall cloud appeared with extremely fast winds. Our power went out, and seconds later our minds began to play tricks on us. We examined the sky and thought a group of clouds looked a bit odd, almost swirling. Our local area has been hit with some devastating tornadoes in the past, so we didn't want to take a chance, and ran to a local shop to hide in the basement. I was shaking uncontrollably until I snapped out of it and told myself to pull it together. It was such an odd, surreal feeling. Even with past storms, I've never really been frightened, but this all seemed so fast, so uncontrollable, so dangerous. After about thirty minutes it stopped, making it just a dramatic, fast passing storm; which we were very thankful for.
I'd always subconsciously told myself if something of the sort happened, I would grab my camera and hard drive with all my photos on it. But at that moment I didn't give it a passing thought. I thought about it later and was surprised and a bit embarrassed that before it seemed that would be my biggest concern. But no, all I wanted to do was make sure Josh, myself, and my neighbors were out of harm's way. All this to say, I was reminded the sweet lesson that material things can hold such little value in this world.
On a lighter note, I've realized I've become quite a minimalist when it comes to my attire. I really admire gals who can add layer upon layer, and it always compliment each individual piece. When I picked out this outfit, I kept thinking it should have something else.. shouldn't it? But alas, I kept to my simple ways. I just couldn't bare to drown out this stunning ring and pretty patterned skirt. I'll get better at layering one of these days. ;)

ReplyDeleteScary about the storm! We don't get tornadoes here in New Zealand (very often) but it's super windy in my city of Wellington.

ReplyDeleteOh, I completely understand your fear. Here in my corner we have to watch out for hurricanes, so I'm always prepared with food and water just in case..

I just absolutely love that skirt and tank look :)
ReplyDeleteTornados freak me out!! I have grown up in CA so they are so foreign to me and I've heard people talk about our Earthquakes, but they are nothing compared to an F5. I am glad to hear you are safe and sound :) I like to think if there was any crazy weather/fire in LA I would grab a bunch of material things, but it's nice to be reminded that those things don't actually matter :)

Love that skirt! I'm glad you were all okay :)
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you're safe. I am terrified of tornadoes - we don't really have them in Australia but when I lived in St Louis there were a couple and it really is so scary! Nature is a scary thing, sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI feel you on the minimalism - I can't seem to do layer upon layer these day - even in winter! x
Wow, that sounds so scary! Certainly a sobering thought. I'm so glad you're safe, though. Your outfit is lovely, as always! :)
ReplyDeleteGlad it was just a passing storm!
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean about the layers - I've never quite grasped it myself, but I guess I'll learn one day :)

So nice photos! SKIRT ♥
ReplyDeleteGlad you're okay!! That sounds a bit terrifying - praying that the bad weather stays away from your parts!
ReplyDeleteAlso, you look lovely. As usual. :)
see, sleeping on the roof seems way more terrifying to me than tornadoes! my fear of heights surpasses all other fears of mine....but then again, growing up in oklahoma, aka tornado alley, kind of de-sensitizes you to that weather....but yeah, i can't even sit on a roof without shaking, let alone sleep on one... eeek!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds scary! A few tornadoes ripped through our area (I live in Mass, we were not prepared) last summer and it was terrifying. I'm glad everything ended up being okay.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a simple kind of girl when it comes to clothes :) That ring is stunning by the way!
Im so glad it was just a bad storm and everyone is okay! how scary!!! im still so ever jealous of you getting to sleep on your roof though!
ReplyDeleteI love love love your minimalist style kinsey. from a girl who loves layers, its always refreshing to see simplicity too. I sometimes wish I had it in me to be a bit more simple, but everytime I get dressed, there I go with more and more, ha ha. I think your style is just spot on.

Midwest storms aren't anything to mess around with. They are sudden and powerful but also so breathtaking. I'm always torn between running to the basement or out into the yard. :)

ReplyDeleteLove Love Love this broomstick skirt, in fact I happen to thrift the same one once...Maybe we have something in common, eh?
ReplyDeleteYour story also touched me...I've always thought, I can live w/out my things...as long as my husband, my doggie Sophee, and I are ok. We can rebuild mere "stuff". But, I can never get my family back.....

I have that skirt! It was my mama's and I stole it from her :) I am maxi-obsessed and it remains one of my favorites! It's been all around the world with me.
ReplyDeleteGood thing you know what to do in case a real storm hits. Reading about things like this makes me happy that I don't live in the states.
