Computer Case DIY

Tuesday

During our trip to India, we bought a beautiful leather satchel for one of our laptops. Ever since, I've wanted to create another bag to carry around the other laptop. I wanted to incorporate leather so that they would essentially look well together. Here's what I came up with:

1.// Begin by cutting out the front pieces of the case. I measured mine to fit a Macbook Pro. Take the measurements of your laptop and add three inches to the width and height for the front fabric piece. For the leather, measure according to the size flap you want. Mine was 21 inches from the longest point. To create a jagged look, create a pretty pattern with your scissors, or purchase a leather that already has a jagged edge.
2.// Next, with the front sections facing inward, stitch the fabric and leather pieces together to create the front of the bag, then flip it right side out.
3.// Next, cut out another fabric section twice the length of the outside fabric piece. Sew a piece of batting the same size onto the back.
4.// From the fabric + batting rectangle you just created, fold it in half, fabric side facing in, and stitch the sides, creating the inside of the bag.
5.// Next, take the outer section bag, and place it inside the inner bag. Both right sides of the fabric should be facing one another. Then, stitch the two fabric ends together. Do not stitch together the fabric and leather side.
6.// Flip the bag right side out, stuffing the inner bag into the outer bag. Then, take the fasteners and attach them to the end of the flap and the base of the fastener symmetrical to the one on the flap. The fasteners I purchased had instructions on how to apply on the back of the package. Since fasteners can vary, try and purchase a package with instructions as well.
7.// Lastly, fold over the hem of the inside fabric facing the leather. Stitch this in place. You'll have a seam going through the leather, so if you don't want a showing seam, secure the fabric in place with leather glue.
8.// Enjoy your new computer case!

My best friend and I are nerding up tonight and going on a notebook finding/buying date. Hope your Tuesday is a lovely one.

  14. So adorably chic!
Just wondering, where do you buy the leather to make this? I feel like Australia is so ... DIY deprived of materials. Or maybe that's just me and I don't know where to look.

  24. I don't know if it is just me, or what, but I'm really confused by the instructions. This is an amazing idea and something I have been wanting to do. But I feel like the instructions aren't super clear.

Thank you for this post, though. It is a lovely piece. Hopefully I can figure the steps out and create one myself.

    Keep being awesome.
